Jumpsuit for women – comfort and chic in one piece

From the world of sport to fashion atelier

The origins of the jumpsuit may be found in many sources, its unobvious shape points to inspiration from a variety of fashion trends of the last centuries. The fact is that the first jumpsuit was designed in the early 20th century by Florentine Thayat who created it for the contemporary aviators, paratroopers and racing drivers. For each of them a one-piece outfit was practical and comfortable and worked well in extreme conditions caused by rapid speed and high air pressure. However, within a short time, the jumpsuit was spotted by contemporary creators and fashion devotee who quickly adapted it to their needs, creating an elegant versions of jumpsuits for evening. The 1920s- the time of fun and avant-garde style, so such an original quickly gained acclaim among urban high society. When Elsa Shiaparelli, the biggest fashion oracle of the first half of the 20th century, designed a silk version of a romper for women, it has become the most desirable element of clothing for all women who wanted to look stylish and fashionable. It was the first sign that women's jumpsuit would settle in a woman's closet for a long time and evolve with the next decades of fashion.

Not only for women

These evolutions followed almost every decade, presenting newer and more extravagant version of the jumpsuit. In the 1950s jumpsuits were available in the version with bare arms, tight, showing off the waist and, in the fashionable version with shorts - perfect for the beach and picnics, popular at the time. The jumpsuit was present everywhere - in the collections of Emilio Pucci, on the streets, at parties and on stage. It was worn by women, but also men, who, inspired by Elvis Presley, started to wear it in the 1960s. The hippie era and the 1970s were the golden period in the history of jumpsuit – back then, everyone had at least one.

Ladies’ jumpsuit – for gym and a glamorous party

Today we witness a great variety of jumpsuits that every couple of seasons return on the catwalks and dominate the stores. Designers such as Balmain, Isabel Marant and Stella McCartney understand that it has become a classic item in women's closet and create the new versions, suitable for any occasion. 2013 has been hailed as the year of women's jumpsuit and strengthened its position among the classics of women's fashion.
